We spend a lot of time outside in our family even in the deepest depths of winter, partly working on the garden, partly to wear out our toddler and because I love nothing more than getting wrapped up for a winter walk and then coming home to hot chocolate and a slice of cake or a bowl of hot soup (check out my favourite french onion soup recipe which is perfect for post-walk warmups!)
Autumn and winter also give a bit more time to spend on indoor pursuits, like sewing, and in my case that has always meant felt embroidery kits. I adore the Bucilla Advent kits and have made three, and have two more to make at the moment, but I have also made some simpler kits for decorations for my daughter’s bedroom. The first was a kit of woodland animals to hang from a little light up tree that she has, and now I’ve bought a British birds kit to ring the changes.
I also need to start getting things together for autumn home decorating. I collected and dried the seed heads from my poppies a few weeks ago, so they’re waiting in the garage (first I need to shake the poppy seeds into a bag so that they don’t go all over the house!) I’d like to find an autumnal wreath for the front door too. Last night I brought the last of the summer in with a bouquet of gladioli in yellow-green and deep purple. It’s a grey day but the vibrant green from all the rain we’ve had seems to be prolonging that summer feeling a bit.
